Lab-grown vs mined diamond prices in rand
The same carbon, the same sparkle, a very different invoice. Here is what lab-grown diamond rings actually cost in South Africa right now, with prices pulled live from our collection.
The short version
A lab-grown diamond is chemically and optically identical to a mined one, and it is graded on exactly the same 4Cs scale. The difference is where it crystallised: a machine in weeks instead of the earth over a billion years. Because growing diamonds skips mining, rough-stone middlemen, and a long markup chain, a mined diamond of equivalent size and grade typically retails for 3 to 5 times the price of its lab-grown twin. Same chemistry, same fire, and the saving usually buys a bigger stone, a better metal, or the honeymoon.
Real prices, right now
These numbers come straight from our live collection, not a brochure. Every engagement ring is made to order in Cape Town with an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond, and every product page shows the exact price in each metal.
| Stone | Lab-grown ring from | In 18ct gold from | Mined equivalent, typically |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1ct diamond | R8 999 | R19 999 | R26 997 to R44 995 |
| 2ct diamond | R14 999 | R24 999 | R44 997 to R74 995 |
| 3ct diamond | R19 999 | R30 999 | R59 997 to R99 995 |
Lab-grown prices are live from the Stacked&Co collection and update as the collection does. Mined figures are typical retail ranges for an equivalent carat weight and grade (3x to 5x), not quotes for a specific stone.

Numbers in a table are one thing. Here is where each carat bracket starts in the current collection:
- 1ct: Elodie Cushion Glow Solitaire 1ct Diamond from R8 999, with the per-metal price for every option shown on the product page.
- 2ct: Elodie Cushion Glow Solitaire 2ct Diamond from R14 999, with the per-metal price for every option shown on the product page.
- 3ct: Elodie Cushion Glow Solitaire 3ct Diamond from R19 999, with the per-metal price for every option shown on the product page.
Why the gap is so big
Mined diamond pricing carries the full weight of its supply chain: exploration, mining, sorting, cutting houses, dealers, and several margins before a stone ever reaches a jewellery counter. A lab-grown diamond goes from grower to cutter to certifier to us. Fewer hands, fewer markups, same material.
What the gap is not: a difference in quality. Both kinds of diamond are graded on the same colour, clarity, cut, and carat scales by the same independent laboratories, and both come out of the box with the same hardness, brilliance, and fire. An IGI-certified lab-grown diamond is not a lookalike. It is a diamond, certificate and all. If you want the full chemistry lesson, read are lab-grown diamonds real?
One honest caveat: a mined diamond carries scarcity value that some buyers want, the way some people want a first-edition book. If that story matters to you, a mined stone is the right call. If what matters is the diamond on the hand and how far your budget goes, lab-grown wins the maths every time.
How to compare quotes properly
Comparing ring prices across jewellers only works if you compare the whole specification. Hold these four constant and the numbers become meaningful:
- Carat and cut quality, not just carat. Cut drives sparkle more than any other C.
- Certification. An independent IGI report means the grades were checked by a lab, not by the person selling the stone.
- The metal. Silver, 9ct, 18ct, and platinum price very differently. Our product pages show all of them side by side.
- What is included. Our prices include the IGI certificate, free insured delivery anywhere in South Africa, and one free resize on engagement rings.
